Summer - Week 2
by Deanne Stewart-Mills
Welcome to the second challenge for The Seasoned Scrapper. Throughout the year, you will be making cards for this challenge, as well as during CC's and no doubt just because you can
Now, you will have lots of cards, but perhaps nowhere to keep them. With this challenge, I am going to solve that dilemma for you, as we will be creating a card storage box that you can sort into occasions, months, or whatever you fancy.
You could also make a stack of cards, fill the box and give it away as a gift. It would also make a great place to store school awards, small embellishments, or even bills (just make it a bit wider).
I have made my card holder with 8 pockets. You are welcome to add more or less, but you may need to adjust the size of the rest of the box accordingly.
I also chose cardstock colours that remind me of gelato icecream, just perfect on a hot summer's day.
This box is not difficult to make, but it does require a little patience, so make sure you can sit down to it when you are feeling fresh and won't have the kids (or DH ) nagging at you to help them with something
I would like to thank Sherry Mendoza for sharing her idea and instructions with me. Sherry tells me she got the original idea from the internet somewhere, but I would still like to acknowledge Sherry, as it is her idea and creation which inspired me. I have changed the instructions a little and turned it into me-speak (ie my own words).
And here's how:
Step 1 - Gather your supplies
You will need:
~ Plenty of cardstock or patterned papers (measuring at least 12")
~ Thin chipboard for inner dividers if you prefer that to patterned paper or cardstock.
~ Extra chipboard to reinforce the lid and bottom pieces.
~ Paper trimmer or metal ruler & scalpel
~ Bone folder
~ Good strong double-side tape (Express-It super tacky is excellent)
~ Various patterned papers and embellishments to decorate
~ large brads (or buttons) for "feet"
~ eyelets & ribbon (if you want a handle)
~ magnet clasp, velco or other clasp (to hold closed)
~ Some patience
Step 2 - Measure and Cut all pieces
It is very important that you cut carefully and accurately when cutting all the pieces, as this will ensure that it all goes together effortlessly later on.
Cut 2 pieces of pattened paper or cardstock for the body (outside) measuring:7.5" x 12" (lid/back/bottom)
7.5" x 8" (front/bottom) If you are going to decorate the body piece, then also, from different PP or card, cut bottom front, lid front and lid top pieces measuring:7.25" x 5.25" (bottom front)
7.25" x 2.25" (lid front)
7.25" x 2.25" (lid top piece) To prevent the lid top and box bottom from bending or buckling, I recommend cutting extra pieces of card to reinforce them. Cut extra pieces measuring 7.25" x 2.25" (reinforcing pieces) For the accordian sides of the box
Cut 2 pieces of pp or card to measure 12" x 5" Dividers (pockets)Cut 8 pieces of cardstock or heavy pp to measure 5” x 7”
Step 3 - Score & Fold body piece7.5" x 12" piece - score this piece at 2.5", 5" and 10.5"
7.5" x 8 " - score at 2.5"
Fold both pieces on the score lines
Adhere the 2 pieces together to form the box body. It joins on the bottom.
If you are reinforcing the lid top or box bottom, adhere the extra 7.25" x 2.25" pieces of cardstock in place.
Reinforcing the bottom:
Now is the time to change the shape of the lid, decorate the bottom front, lid top and lid front, and add "feet" to your box.
Adding feet (I added 6 feet).
After adding the feet, I placed an extra piece of reinforcement over the top of the split brads (also hides the brads ).

If you want a handle, punch holes and attach eyelets approx. 1" from the outside edge of your lid top. Thread a piece of ribbon through and tie off.

Step 4 - Score & Fold concertina
There are 2 options for scoring: Option 1 - You can score at 1 1/2" intervals all the way along, then flip the card and repeat. Or Option 2 - You can score every 3/4" BUT you must flip the card after each time you score.
TIP: When scoring the concertina pieces, start with the wrong side facing you, especially if you are using PP or textured card, as this will ensure that the pattern/texture is on the outside when the box is assembled.
Score Option 1:
1. Take one of the side pieces and score it at the following intervals.3/4”, 2 ¼”, 3 ¾”, 5 ¼”, 6 ¾”, 8 ¼”, 9 ¾”, 11 ¼” 2. Turn over and score at the following intervals.1 ½”, 3”, 4 ½”, 6”, 7 ½”, 9”, 10 ½” 3. Repeat with the other piece.
4. Fold up both pieces into a concertina shape.
Score Option 2:
1. Take one of the side pieces and score it at the following intervals 3/4”, 1 ½”, 2 ¼”, 3”, 3 ¾”, 4 ½”, 5 ¼”, 6”, 6 ¾”, 7 ½”, 8 ¼”, 9”, 9 ¾”, 10 ½”, 11 ¼”
remembering to turn after each time you score 2. Repeat with the other piece.
4. Fold up both pieces into a concertina shape.
Step 5 - Assembly
1. Apply tape to the end of each of the concertinas, on the RIGHT side.
2. Turn them over to the wrong side (so the ends with tape are now underneath) and apply tape to each mountain fold
3. Take a divider and adhere to the concertina sides, starting from the back.
Continue until all the dividers are in place.
4. Adhere the assembled dividers to the box back, then squash down a little, bring the front up and adhere in place.
4. Apply clasp/velcro etc to hold the box closed.
Tada!! You are now finished!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, YOUR CHALLENGE is to make one of these boxes
Also, I would like you to decorate it using images and/or colours of summer - make it nice and cheery (not necessarily bright, if that's not your thing). Simply use colours, embellishments etc that make you think of summer.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Upload your card box into the Summer - Week 2 folder in the gallery by Midnight Sunday 14th February to be in the running for the weekly prize.
Weekly Prize:- $10.00 Gift Voucher
To be in the running for the major prize for The Seasoned Scrapper - Summer term, you must upload ALL 10 challenges into the relevant folder/s in the gallery by Midnight Sunday 11th April.
Major Prize:- $50.00 Gift Voucher
Don't forget! PM me when you have finished your challenge so I can update my records. If you forget, you might not be in the running for a prize!

Awesome Dee - love your folder - and Nic's too! I've already got a special box for my cards, but I reckon this would be perfect for my mini-alpha stickers to live in (Carolee's Creations etc). Might just have to pick up some more of my favourite bright papers this week & get stuck in (just as soon as I find my tools LOL!). _________________
